María Luisa Galardi (Oiartzun,1964), founder of the furniture company Ondarreta, received the Joxe María Korta Award in honour of the professional trajectory last 22 November, "for great values of sacrifice and work." This acknowledgment, granted by the Basque Government, coincides with the company's 40th anniversary after its establishment in 1975. Its facilities lie in Oiartzun (Gipuzkoa, Spain). Its establishment and relaunch took shape over a foundation of “sustainable development,” applying “extra design and quality” to its products (tables and chairs, mainly). Read more
Under the II edition of the Bilbao Bizkaia D Week 2016, the Asociación de Diseñadores de Euskadi (Basque Country Association of Designers) (EIDE) has organised a programme of activities that seeks to promote and spread Design culture, as well as professional exchanges. The programme runs from 17 through 30 November, with actions taking place in the city of Bilbao: meetings, open houses, round tables and conferences, workshops and book presentations. Read more
Data from the first semester of 2016: Biscay and the Basque Country
“Statistics on Patent, Utility Models, Industrial Design and Trademark applications. First Semester, 2016.”. This is the title of the document drawn up by barrixe – Observatory of Innovation in Biscay. Although the data show a slow-down in applications for Patents in Biscay and the Basque Country, they also show an upward trend in regards to applications for Utility Models, Industrial design and Trademarks in comparison with the same period in 2015. VII edition of the International Design and Creativity Festival
The VII edition of the International Design and Creativity Festival: “Selected Europe From Bilbao 2016”, is scheduled for the 18 and 19 November, at Azkuna Zentroa. The call, supported by Bilbao Town Hall and the Regional Government of Biscay, along with the Bilbao Bizkaia Design Council, brings Graphic design, Visual communication and Art creators together. Before holding the Festival, a sample with the selected Design projects will be exhibited at the regional company BEAZ’s facilities in October. The book Selected the book will include these projects. At the 3rd edition of the Wood Architecture Awards, Design modality, the company Arquitectos y Diseñadores Asociados Disaro won the award for the street furniture project “Pedestrian fence Bilbao”. This award, under the Wood Design category, is part of the awards promoted by EGURTEK: International Wood Construction and Architecture Forum. The Jury’s ruling was announced last 10 June. The award ceremony will be held at Bilbao Exhibition Centre, the 21 October, 2016, during the 6th Forum, held every two years. Read more
Through the project “Basque Design Industries. Milan 2016”, promoted by EIDE (Association of Designers of the Basque Country/Euskadi), a group of Design teams and industrial companies attended the 55th edition of the International Furniture Fair of Milan (Salone Internazionale del Mobile) and the Design Week (Milan Design Week), from 12 through 17 April, 2016. Material ConneXion Bilbao collaborated with the initiative, and it was supported by the sponsorship of the Regional Government of Biscay, the Etxepare Basque Institute and Estudios Durero. The experience received a positive rating by Basque representatives. EIDE’s management has seen how their internationalisation programme’s objectives were met at Lombardy’s capital. Read more
SIMON: Manufacturer of interfaces, electric material and technological solutions, it has won the National Design Award, in the “Companies” modality, granted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The jury highlighted “the company’s ability to introduce Design into products for everyday use.” In the words of Luis Lopezbarrena (general manager of SIMON): “we are proud of being able to add this recognition to the celebration of our one hundredth anniversary. Our motto, Simon Light Up Emotions, allows users to create ambiances with our products that awaken all kinds of emotion through Design.” Read more
Designer Mario Ruiz Rubio (Alicante, 13 August, 1965) won the National Design Award, in the “Professionals”category, granted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The jury highlighted his “timeless, enduring style, as well as his international projection.” Mario Ruiz, whose studio is in Barcelona, summarises how his work is oriented thus: “From the inside out” with the premise of adapting to "the client’s actual needs.” Read more
The “First Graphic Design Conference” will go into handling “Corporate identity graphic trademarks” in depth. This proposal falls under the framework of the Basque Country University Summer Course Programme, acting as a space to exchange experiences between professionals, academics, researchers, companies and students related to Graphic Design. The sessions will be held from the 18th until the 20th of July, in San Sebastian. Read more
