National Design Award 2016, for “Professionals”

Mario Ruiz: “From the Inside Out”

Designer Mario Ruiz Rubio (Alicante, 13 August, 1965) won the National Design Award, in the “Professionals”category, granted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The jury highlighted his “timeless, enduring style, as well as his international projection.” Mario Ruiz, whose studio is in Barcelona, summarises how his work is oriented thus: “From the inside out” with the premise of adapting to “the client’s actual needs.” ■

Designer Mario Ruiz Rubio received the National Design Award 2016 (“Professionals” modality), promoted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, through Secretary of State of R+D+i. The jury placed value on his work, deeming his career “brilliant and well-established, having achieved an identity of recognised prestige.”

Mario Ruiz, in first person: “I’m not a magazine cover designer. I’ve always made a very specific type of product for the client: tranquilly, slow and deliberate, and yes, timeless, while seeking continuity.”

“Three Families”

The designer also confessed that he wants to enjoy the award with his “three families: his own, who has to put up with him, his professional friend family who work in his same field, and therefore understand his circumstances, and his clients.”

A graduate in Industrial Design (1995) from the University School ELISAVA of Barcelona, the scope of his multidisciplinary work includes Industrial product, Technology, Furniture, Lighting, Office and Applied graphics projects.

Efficiency is one of his characteristics, as shown by the multitude of commissions carried out for over one hundred companies, mainly from abroad. ■
