Data from the first semester of 2016: Biscay and the Basque Country

Patents, Utility Models, Industrial design and Trademarks

“Statistics on Patent, Utility Models, Industrial Design and Trademark applications. First Semester, 2016.”. This is the title of the document drawn up by barrixe – Observatory of Innovation in Biscay. Although the data show a slow-down in applications for Patents in Biscay and the Basque Country, they also show an upward trend in regards to applications for Utility Models, Industrial design and Trademarks in comparison with the same period in 2015. ■

Barrixe – Observatory of Innovation in BiscayAs it has constantly done in the past, barrixe – Observatory of Innovation in Biscay has drawn up the document Estadísticas de Solicitudes de Patentes, Modelos de Utilidad, Diseño industrial y Marcas. Primer Semestre 2016 (Statistics on Patent, Utility Models, Industrial Design and Trademark Applications. First Semester 2016).” The data, taken from the data published on a monthly basis by the Spanish Office of Patents and Trademarks, show the following aspects in Biscay and the Basque Country.

As a whole, regarding applications for Utility Models, Industrial design and Trademarks, they have generally increased in the Basque Country. This is not the case with Patents, for which applications decreased in comparison with the semester the previous year.

Industrial Design and Utility Models

We are focusing on data related to Industrial Design and Utility Models, given their particular relationship with the Design industry and its practise. In both cases, we can observe a certain expansion in activity in the Basque Country.

For the specific case of applications for Industrial design, in Biscay, the number of applications remained the same (16); in Gipuzkoa, there was a noteworthy increase (from 4 to 11), while Alava clearly experienced a decrease (from 7 to 1). Globally, the number of applications has slightly increased in the Basque Country (with 28 in total, 2.52% of Spain).

In regards toUtility Models, Biscay stands out, with 26 applications (12 more than in 2015); Gipuzkoa decreased from 24 to 17, and Alava went from 5 to 21. With these figures, the Basque Country reaches 64 applications (21 more than the previous year: 4.93% of all of Spain).
